6. Messy or Missing Sealants
Whether it’s plumber’s tape (Teflon) or plumber's putty, using the wrong sealant: or none at all: is a guaranteed way to cause a slow, hidden leak. Some modern faucets come with a rubber gasket that replaces the need for putty; if you add putty anyway, it can actually interfere with the seal. Conversely, skipping tape on threaded metal connections will lead to drips under your sink that you might not notice for weeks.
How to Fix It: Read the manufacturer’s instructions. If it has a plastic/rubber base gasket, skip the putty. If you are connecting metal-to-metal threads, use 2-3 wraps of Teflon tape in the direction of the threads.
